Lot Description
|
The wonderfully futuristic Philco Predicta television set came
in several different models, including a floor-standing pedestal
model, as well as two different versions of the tabletop model.
All three versions had the swiveling picture tube feature that
makes these sets so popular. This is the rarer of the two
table-top varieties. The major difference between the two
table-top units is found in this set's inclusion of a UHF
receiver, as opposed to those standard versions with VHF
capability only. This particular model has had some minimal
restoration, with a repainting of the CRT's metal back casing
and re-chroming of the golden metal support struts and wire
legs. It is in perfect working order, with all of its original
knobs, and the original finish on its mahogany-colored wooden
electronics casing. (The casing shows the usual wear from years
of family use, but remains attractive and dark). The restorer
tells us that this example's CRT is incredibly strong in its
picture quality. The tube's phosphorescent area measures
approximately 19-1/2" across x 19-3/4" tall x 20-1/2"
diagonally. The outer measurement from the tips of the gold
plated side supports is 23-1/2"; the entire unit is about 15"
deep and stands 28" tall. Also different from the previous set
that we have offered, this beauty still possesses its
side-mount, telescoping antenna, also in matching gold chrome.
The unit now has a 75-ohm adapter screwed to the back plate's
antenna contacts, providing for an easy hookup to cable or a
VCR, or even a DVD, with an additional cable adaptation. The
Predicta was its designer's vision of the future. It is a
hauntingly beautiful future that may still await us.
