Lot Description

PLEASE NOTE: This Lot Description has been modified since the original publishing. Please re-read the description before bidding.

The catalog description states that the unit is "fully working." We should explain that it works perfectly in "continuous play" mode, rotating properly from disk to successive disk, playing each in its turn. Also, the front panel selection switches will properly interrupt this pattern and play the chosen selection, then the unit will return to continuous play. However, the manual coin-op mode does not respond and will require repair if this is desired.

******************************************************************

Wurlitzer first produced this outstanding countertop jukebox in August 1938, as part of their line for 1939. They assigned it model number "61," and proceeded to make 8,260 units. The classic design of this model's cabinet was made all the more striking with Wurlitzer's blending of tiers of burled maple and walnut veneers, both above a black lacquered base, with each tier joined to the other with flowing chrome trim. Additional decorative niceties include wood-grained metal escutcheons on the upper half of its case and illuminated corner pieces of translucent red catalin. (Dimensions - 22" tall, 21" wide, and 18" deep). The machine has a capacity of twelve 78 rpm records, and we have to declare that its record-changing mechanism is simply mesmerizing, unique among the different models we've ever seen. Unlike its larger Wurlitzer "cousins," this little countertop model does not have the internal space for a mechanism that could "flip" the records, therefore limiting its performance to only one side of each of its platters. There's a switch on the back of the unit that allows either for continuous free play, or for activation only by the nickel coin gear on the front panel. This unit has been restored and reconditioned by a talented hobbyist/semi-professional, and has been kept all-original, with the two exceptions of an excellently reproduced back door piece and the installation of a lightweight needle cartridge conversion kit that produces better sound, and that will greatly limit the amount of record wear. This model #61 remains truly unique in its look, fully working with phenomenal sound quality, and Excellent in condition. It is one special piece that will stop visitors to your home dead in their tracks. It's just that "hep."
